Actor De-Rolling

De-rolling is the process of getting out of character and back to yourself in everyday life. Sometimes this can be a simple walk out of the room but with more emotionally heavy plays this can be difficult. This can look different for every artist. To assist with this see the techniques to the right for examples.

An additional in-depth resource from the Arts Wellbeing Collective:

Techniques:

  • Be Literal! Take off your costume or rehearsal clothes and wear something new that you do not associate with the process or character. Maybe even a shower to "scrub off" the character.

  • Get Physical. Shake off the character by actually shaking and jumping or even by doing yoga and taking a walk

  • Use Your Senses. Play music, spray scents, or wear clothes/ touch textures that are different sensory experiences than those your character would interact with.

  • Do an activity! Call a friend, read a book, or watch media that has a different subject matter than the show.

  • Meditate. Address and clear your mind of the subject matter you are confronting. Acknowledge the strength you are utilizing for this process.
