Born on June 2nd, 1878 in Colne, Lancashire but eventually made his home in Surreyside, West Park Street, Dewsbury, England.

Hartley was a violinist who worked on the Cunard Liner Mauretania before leaving to become bandmaster on the Titanic

He left his fiancé back in England after spending a week with her before boarding

After the collision, Hartley led the orchestra in playing ragtime tunes (there is great debate on the last song played, either Autumn or Nearer, My God, To Thee!

His body was recovered as #224 on May 4th, 1912, it was brought to his hometown where a funeral was held at the Bethel Independent Methodist church where Hartley had been a choirboy

Hartley’s violin was later sold at auction for $1.6m
