  • Wallace Henry Hartley

  • Born on June 2nd, 1878 in Colne, Lancashire but eventually made his home in Surreyside, West Park Street, Dewsbury, England.

  • Hartley was a violinist who worked on the Cunard Liner Mauretania before leaving to become bandmaster on the Titanic

  • He left his fiancé back in England after spending a week with her before boarding

  • After the collision, Hartley led the orchestra in playing ragtime tunes (there is great debate on the last song played, either Autumn or Nearer, My God, To Thee!

  • His body was recovered as #224 on May 4th, 1912, it was brought to his hometown where a funeral was held at the Bethel Independent Methodist church where Hartley had been a choirboy

  • Hartley’s violin was later sold at auction for $1.6m
