-
Thomas Andrew Jr.
-
Born on February 7th, 1873 at Ardara House, Comber, Northern Ireland son of the Right Hon. Thomas Andrews and Eliza Pirrie.
-
He studied at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution in 1884 but at 16 he left school to work at Harland & Wolff (where his uncle Lord Pirrie was the owner) as a premium apprentice
-
He eventually became managing director of H & W in charge of designing and in 1901 became a member of the Institution of Naval Architects
-
He married in 1908 and had 1 daughter, living in Belfast
-
He made a point of sailing with a team of mechanics on maiden voyages, called the Guarantee Group, who would observe operations and recommend future improvements
-
He lived in a complementary first-class cabin A-36 and was serviced by bedroom steward Henry Etches (played by JP Berry)
-
Andrews barely noticed the collision, looking at notes during impact, and Captain Smith sent a message requesting him on the bridge.
-
Him and Captain Smith visited some of the rooms that were filling with water and Andrews broke the news that he did not expect her to stay afloat for more than two hours.
-
In the final hours of the disaster, Andrews went around the decks encouraging passengers to wear lifebelts and get in lifeboats.
-
There has been debate about the last place he was seen, some say he was on the bridge with Captain Smith just before the final plunge but the most famous story is of Thomas Andrews staring into space by the painting in the first-class smoking room, with his lifebelt discarded first
-
The painting was Plymouth Harbour painted by Norman Wilkinson
