Joseph Groves Boxhall
-
Born on March 23rd, 1884 in Hull, Yorkshire, into a seafaring family
-
He joined his first ship in 1899 and received his Second Mate’s Certificate in 1903, eventually becoming First Mate in 1905 and later passing his Master’s and Extra Master’s certifications in 1907
-
He began working with the White Star Line in 1907 working as sixth officer to start. At some point he worked with Charles Lightoller, the only other Titanic officer he would know before sailing.
-
He was sailing on Titanic as Fourth Officer, still a junior position, and would do regular watches, navigation, and assist passengers and crew
-
He heard the 3 bells during the collision and made it to the bridge to see Murdoch closing the watertight doors.
-
He was instructed to inspect the forward part of the ship and found nothing but a steerage passenger handed him a piece of ice which had fallen on the deck
-
Eventually, he was sent to get other more senior officers and then find the ships position which would be used by the Marconi Operators to send out a call for assistant
-
Boxhall then began firing rockets with the hope of being seen by a distant steamer
-
He was put in charge of Lifeboat 2 and hoped to return for swimmers but the women on his boat protested despite it being less than two-thirds full.
-
He sent out flares from the boat to aid the Carpathia in finding them.
-
He was called to testify at both inquiries and later developed a lung condition from exposure in the lifeboats.
-
He continued sailing including working in the Royal Naval Reserve and serving in the war.
-
He would eventually marry Marjory Beddells from Yorkshire in 1919 and have no children.
-
He eventually served as a senior officer all the way up to Chief Officer but never received his own command and retired in 1940.
-
He was a historical advisor on the 1958 film A Night to Remember which surprised his family
-
His health deteriorated in the 1960s and he died in hospital in 1967 - the last of Titanic’s surviving deck officers to pass away - his remains were scattered over the position he had calculated that the Titanic had gone down.
