First Class Baby

  • Kate Murphy

  • Born October 6th, 1893 in Frostragh, Killoe, Co Longford, Ireland.

  • Youngest of 12 in a Roman Catholic family

  • Many members of her family were living in the U.S. and despite promising their mom that they would wait to leave, Kate and her sister bought a ticket on the Titanic for £15 ($325.37 today)

  • While aboard, Kate and Maggie shared a room on E-deck with two other girls from Longford, Kate Gilnagh and Kate Mullin.

  • They were also acquainted with other people from Longford including James Farrell (the basis for Jim Farrell played by Grant Pace).

  • All 3 Kates survived (possibly in Lifeboat 16) and lore has it that James Farrell threatened to punch a crewman if he did not let the women pass to the boats.

  • Kate would go on to be married, live in Brooklyn, and have 3 children.

  • Kate lived 6 years after her husband passed, dying in 1968 at age 74
